The ATES research group is dedicated to advancing the fields of assistive technology and embedded systems through a unique multidisciplinary approach. Our mission is to address complex societal challenges by integrating expertise from diverse domains such as computer science, engineering, psychology, and education. By fostering collaboration across disciplines, we aim to create innovative solutions that bridge the gap between humans and technology.
Associate Professor
Tania Di Mascio is an Associate Professor at the University of L’Aquila (DISIM), leading the Interaction and Computational Systems Lab and the L’Aquila node of CINI Assisting Technology. She has held key scientific roles in EU projects and coordinates the ATES@AQ research group. She serves on steering committees, reviews for international journals, and contributes to organizing major conferences. She is an active member of SIGCHI, the Center of Excellence of DEWS, and HiPEAC.
Assistant Professor
Luigi Pomante is an Assistant Professor (tenured) at “Università degli Studi dell’Aquila (DISIM)”. His activities focus mainly on Electronic Design Automation and Networked Embedded Systems. He has been (co)author of more than 150 articles published on international conference proceedings, journals, and books. From 2010, he has been responsible of more than 15 funded European and national research projects.
Assistant Professor
Giacomo Valente is an Assistant Professor in Computer Architecture at the University of L’Aquila (DISIM). His research focuses on electronic design automation, reconfigurable architectures, and real-time systems. He has been (co)author of more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings. He serves as a reviewer and member of several TPCs related to his research topics. He is an active member of Center of Excellence of DEWS and HiPEAC.
Assistant Professor
Vittoriano Muttillo is a senior research fellow at the University of Teramo and an active member of the Centre of Excellence DEWS and the HiPEAC consortium. His research focuses on Embedded Systems, particularly in Electronic Design Automation and model-based system-level HW/SW co-design. He develops EDA tools for managing mixed-criticality and cyber-physical systems on heterogeneous multi/many-core platforms and employs automated software engineering and AI/ML techniques to enhance digital twin modeling and simulation.
Post-Doc Researcher
Sara Peretti is a research fellow at the University of L’Aquila (DEWS), focusing on developmental and educational psychology in connection with digital technologies. She is a member of the ATES@AQ research group and serves on editorial boards, reviewing for international journals and conferences. She is an active member of AIP, CLASTA, and part of the Scientific and Program Committees of SLERD and CHItaly.
Post-Doc Researcher
Marco Santic holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of L’Aquila. Since 2008, he has collaborated with the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering and the spin-off WEST Aquila on various research projects. He is a PostDoc researcher at the Center of Excellence DEWS, focusing on embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, and DSP in multiprocessor architectures. He has co-authored several publications and participated in national and European research projects.
Post-Doc Researcher
Federica Caruso is a Postdoc Research Fellow at the University of L’Aquila (DISIM). Her research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction, Assistive Technology, and Technology-Enhanced Learning, with a particular emphasis on methodologies for designing Serious Games and Immersive Virtual Reality-based systems. She is actively involved in international research projects, serves as a reviewer for scientific journals, and is a program committee member for major conferences.
Senior Graduate
Francesco Di Battista received the MS. Degree in Electronic Engineering in 2013 from University of L’Aquila. He has experience in developing software tools to support the design of Networked Embedded Systems and he is specialized in reliability and qualification of satellite HW/SW platforms. He has contributed to projects based on LEON3, LEON4, and ARM architectures, with real-time operating systems and virtualization mechanisms. His interests are in system reliability and development of solutions for critical environments.
Ph.D. Student
Leonardo Fazzini received his M.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of L’Aquila in 2024. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technologies at the University of L’Aquila. His research interests include the development of reliable systems, RISC-V-based architectures for critical applications, and neural network execution on embedded devices.
Master’s Graduate
Giulia Laureti holds an M.Sc. in Communication, Innovation, and Experience Design from LUMSA University in Rome.
She is currently a research fellow at the University of L’Aquila, focusing on User Experience Design for emerging digital technologies. Her research interests include User Experience and User Interface Design, with a particular focus on inclusive and accessible design.
A significant focus of our work is on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), exploring how people interact with technology to develop systems that are intuitive, accessible, and user-centered. Our research seeks to enhance the way humans and computers collaborate, ensuring that technology is designed to empower individuals and support diverse applications, from accessibility to productivity and beyond.
